Google’s Konami Code Easter egg gives you ‘unlimited’ searches

The famed Konami code, the sequence of input commands that unlocks cheats in certain games developed by Konami, is back once again, this time via Google.

Using Google’s voice search function, say “up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right,” and a voice will inform you that you’ve unlocked the cheat code, and you now have “unlimited free” searches. The Easter egg was revealed by a YouTube poster, and then recounted by TechCrunch.

It’s obviously just a joke, and if anyone has been operating Google under the assumption that you don’t have unlimited searches, you’ve been doing search engine-ing wrong all this time.

So, what do you get with this code? Thirty extra lives when you accidentally search for something incendiary that your significant other discovers and doesn’t take kindly to? Well, no. You get a funny voice comment. Don’t over think it.

Steam leaked Mafia 4’s release date, and it’s just around the corner

Mafia: The Old Country, the next entry in the long-running franchise, was due out this year — and now Steam has accidentally revealed a potential release date. According to the game's Steam page, it will launch on August 8. The game is also set to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on the same day. Of course, the Steam page doesn't list that information now — it was quickly removed — but eagle-eyed fans caught the error.

While anything short of an official announcement is suspect, information coming from Steam can usually be trusted. Developer Hanger 13 originally planned to announce the release at PAX East in early May. That said, August is still several months away, and the May 8 event is set to "debut a new Gameplay Trailer and offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at the past, present, and future of this storied franchise."

If you're a gamer who has been on Facebook or YouTube in the past week, there's probably a good chance you've seen people arguing about the Nintendo Switch 2's pricing. My Facebook algorithm has interpreted my interest in the system as a sign that I want to see a constant stream of angry memes about how much it costs. While I've seen concerns over the hardware itself dying down, the one complaint that's stuck is the price of its games. My feeds are filled with engagement memes daring commenters to justify Mario Kart World's $90 price tag.

There's just one problem: Mario Kart World does not cost $90, at least based on what we know right now. No currently announced Nintendo Switch 2 game appears to either, but it hasn't stopped that detail from spreading on a fundamentally broken internet.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s final patch releases in less than a week

After far too long a wait, the final patch for Baldur's Gate 3 will hit consoles and PC on April 15. Larian Studios says Patch 8 is the final major patch for the beloved title and adds in a ton of new content, including multiple subclasses, an evil ending, new Cantrips, spells, and more. Patch 8 has undergone stress testing for a long time now to work out all the bugs, and it seems like it's finally ready to be set free into the world like a (slightly) benevolent Elder Brain.

The news comes from Larian's official YouTube channel, appropriately titled the Channel From Hell. On April 16, Larian will host a livestream that will take a "closer look at Patch 8, including the new subclasses" and touch on the future of the game now that all major updates have been released.
